Why
Christians are Called to Environmental Stewardship.
OUR COMMISSION
We believe environmental stewardship is a biblical mandate and commission
from God.
The Christian life is a verb. It is meant to be a life
of action, not one of passivity. As Christians, we are
called to leave the world a better place than we found
it. Jesus said that His people are to carry on His work,
not because we can earn our way to heaven, but rather
from a motive of love and obedience to His Word. We
are to communicate the love of Jesus to the world, demonstrating
His gift of salvation through our service.
All of God’s creation is important to Him, down
to the last sparrow and blade of grass. The story of
mankind in the Bible begins in a garden and ends in
a restored garden. The first commission to God’s
people is found in the opening chapters of Genesis,
which exhorts us to be caretakers of the gift of creation.
But why?
The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans that all of mankind knows there is a God because He
has revealed Himself, and His very nature, through creation.
“For since the creation of the world God's invisible
qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have
been clearly seen, being understood from what has been
made, so that men are without excuse.” (Romans
1:20) God directs this assurance, this undeniable proof,
to people who are struggling with the most basic spiritual
issue: The very existence of God.
We have wrongfully assumed that creation exists for
our own consumption. We must get back to the heart of
God. It is the responsibility of every true Christian
to take stewardship seriously, and that includes environmental
stewardship. We need to embrace the task to “Tend
the Garden.”
